I admit it. When I named this new blog “The Recession-Proof Trainer,” I knew the word recession would grab attention. Anyway, I couldn’t help it - the fact of our recession, along with its impact on my vocation and colleagues, was very much on my mind. And it still is. Isn’t the recession on everyone’s mind?
Maybe, but definitely not in the same way for everyone. Recently I saw a forum post that suggested the recession is just media hype, people are just wallowing in the misery of a bad picture painted by the media, and just because the value of the poster’s home went down a little doesn’t prove to him there “really” is a recession. He, along with many who commented, suggested people would do better to have “a mind-set of abundance” and be more positive. I argue, it is perfectly reasonable to say there is a “real” recession, to take note of recession news (number of layoffs, for example) and still engage in positive thinking and responsible action.
I refuse to put my head in the sand; I watch the news; I don’t blame the media. I don’t think I wallow in it. When I see people in the news who have been negatively impacted, I am not “disgusted” as I saw one Twitter poster say (I un-followed him). No, when I see and hear of people impacted by the recession, be they unknown to me or close friends, it just… puts the recession on my mind again.
By the same token, as I suggested above, since the recession is a fact, what am I going to do about it? What are you going to do about it? In other words:
++For those working in training departments - how can they deliver value with less resources? How can they prepare their families in these times?
++For those high tech trainers without a job - how can they find a job? How can they start a business of their own? How can they extend their network?
I started this blog to address answers to those questions for a small audience, my colleagues in high tech training-related professions. The title “The Recession-Proof Trainer” is hyperbole - I know that. There is no ultimate umbrella against a storm that has the ability to rip up the umbrella! It’s just a catch phrase to allow me to throw out suggestions of my own and encourage my colleagues to share their own ideas.
